WHAT IS THE KETOGENIC DIET?

If you haven’t heard of The ketogenic diet (often called keto), it’s a very low-carb, high-fat diet that shares similarities to paleo, Whole30, and Atkins. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake, and replacing it with fat. When in ketosis, your body switches to burning fat for its primary fuel source.

On Keto, you’re supposed to get at least 70 percent of your calories from Fat, 15 to 25 percent from Protein, and 10 percent from Carbohydrates. You should avoid all grains, legumes, root vegetables, fruit, (except berries) and sugar.

Cheesy Keto Tuna Melts

Recipe Tips:

– Using pre sliced Mozzarella Deli Slices makes this recipe a breeze.

– I turned my oven to broil for the last minute of baking, just to brown the tops a bit more. Watch very closely if you do this step.

– Small square piles of grated mozzarella cheese will work instead of the slices if needed.

– Use 2 170 g cans of tuna.

Haven’t made these yet, but going to. The idea is great. And I’m wondering if using a cheddar (orange) type of cheese would be a little more flavorful and might add to the browning of the outer shell a bit better. Tuna melts are one of my favorite cheat meals in a deli or sandwich place, and I don’t ever see them paired with mozzarella. What do you think? Will try these and leave a comment. Thanks for your creative ideas.

Hi Beth, I haven’t tried using cheddar slices yet but I think you’re right it would definitely be more flavourful. I think it would crisp up well too. I think I’ll give it a try too.

I just made these with the cheddar! They were so good. Tastes just like tuna casserole without the noodles! I will make them again!!

We originally made them with the mozzarella and they were good. But we used a medium cheddar the last time and they were phenomenal. And then we even sprinkled a little Old Bay on them as they cooled. Totally awesome

Do you think these would reheat well in a toaster oven? Always looking for lunch ideas for my husband!

Use parchment paper… do not use foil.

I took this idea and switched the filling to pepperoni and cream cheese!! What a great idea – you can switch fillings around for a cool new treat.

I am going to try other fillings too!

I used havarti cheese sliced I got at Costco. Added a bit of onion salt, pepper and Tajin seasoning. Baked them 10 min. then broiled 1.5 min. They were very good.

I would Preheat oven to 325 F, then bake on a piece of parchment paper for 5 – 7 minutes. or you could reheat in the microwave for very 25 -30 seconds. then add a small amount of time after that if needed. I prefer the oven method though because they stay nice and crispy. Hope that helps.

I see 6 on the pan sheet pics. Are you placing two slices of the mozzarella cheese on top of each other?

Love the simplicity and ease of making these. They’re perfect when you’re busy and need a fast meal. I used Kerrygold savory cheddar and Primal Kitchen mayo. The melts were very tasty. The cheddar is a little greasy once cooked so I put the finished melts on paper towel for a moment before eating. The cheese options and add ins are endless. Will so be making these again and again!

I’ve made these several times now using Mozzarella and Cheddar and both are good. I’m not crazy about them when they’re hot and they’re ok warm but I actually love them cold and eat them right out of the fridge for a quick snack. So good!
